Thirty and Thriving (An Ode to my 30th Birthday)

She takes her time, as if the world’s in slow motion.

People are getting rings or bearing children in their wombs.

They build their homes and empires

yet she remains in her post

unbothered and undeterred by the rush around her.

Someday, she will be there too.

or she would be elsewhere.

She thought the files in her hands,

the baby in her arms,

or the man at her side would complete her

like puzzles fitting together.

This is what the voices around her say.

They shout in her face.

They whisper in her ear.

Why are you here

alone and lovely

in a world of picturesque families and stellar careers?

She drowned the calls

and took a step back

Two steps forward. Another three sideways.

Her feet take her to new realms.

The possibilities are as wide as the universe

Planets are discovered. Galaxies are formed.

The stars gleam

lighting up her face

lighting up her path

and it leads her to places far and unknown.

She forges to a parallel domain

She pens words and weaves stories.

She sees her name in stores and the bestseller’s list

She sips her coffee and waits for sunrise

She worries not for the food on her table

nor the roof on her head

for she had taken care of it.

From walks to runs

leaps to dances

She wouldn’t care how she reaches one point to another.

What is the use of living life in calculated moves

if she wouldn’t twirl and whirl to life’s tango

if she wouldn’t witness how the sun sets and rises.

In the past 30 years,

her life has unfolded right before her.

As another 30 years (and more) loom over,

the stars will align in more ways than one.
